Resident on location media production in Palau, Stock Footage and photography.

In this World of increasing airfares, and increased demand for on location media for environmental subjects, having a reliable and professional camera operator somewhere like Palau certainly makes sense.

When we catalog media for reference here at Lightning Strikes, it’s often with keywords like: Environment, Sanctuary, UNESCO, illegal fishing, underwater, coral reef, shark, Manta Ray, tourism, indigenous, endemic, aerial, subsistence, coral bleaching, global warming, large school of fish, tuna…..

Underwater wildlife of Palau
Underwater icons found on almost every dive in Palau

With a huge variety of healthy almost pristine ecosystems, Palau provides a huge wealth of opportunities for stories. Visually it’s stunning too with it’s tropical islands, rich and diverse coral reefs and plentiful iconic species.

There are numerous conservation stories available, everything from Marine Protected Areas set aside in Mangroves and satellite reefs to the National Marine Sanctuary 80% the size of Texas.

We have WW2 wrecks and their de-mining and recovery of remains, extensive underwater caverns and of course the many marine lakes with their millions of Jellyfish.

A huge range of underwater environments……

The other side of the coin is also available with stories on illegal fishing and the black market trade in protected species, the need to balance tourism and development with conservation. Tuna economics, Climate Change, Ocean acidification, renewable energy, coral bleaching….

There are stories waiting to be told and new technologies waiting to tell them with.

Drone filming services expand shot range with a reasonable budget

Lightning Strike Productions has worked with numerous broadcast entities in Palau over the years including the BBC, CNN, Arte, Thalassa 3, ABC, Channel 9 Australia, Animal Planet and Discovery Channel. It’s also a regular contributor to online news media through it’s stringer services.

Our cameras, both underwater and drone mounted output Raw footage ensuring the very highest in 16 bit quality.

Postcard perfect Palau

And starting this year at Lightning Strike we are starting to do all of this with 360 VR and 3D too……

Finding amazing locations for your production in Palau

Over the first two weeks of June I was commissioned to find locations that fit in with a storyboard for a production due to be shot here for the Palau Visitors Authority.

One of the scenes required a locked split shot of corals and an island/beach mid-ground.

I can’t divulge many details about the plot line right now of course only to say that it will be a tourism educational film to be shown on flights into Palau.

Filming took 6 days with crews from the US and Australia including local entities with a team from Lightning Strike providing Aerial Drone, Underwater and Behind the Scenes filming services.

Location Scout Palau
Part of the remit was “Places children play” and this place was awesome!

Part of the storyboard has an Aerial pov, so I was happy to oblige with a few days of drone flying at some of the most photogenic sites in Palau.

Aerial Palau
Whilst up, many further options for exploration presented themselves
Aerial stock Footage
Beautiful scenery from the air, click on photo for footage link.
Underwater scene with fish
Due to the high production demands all filming was done in Raw including underwater and the Magic Lantern firmware delivered.

This major production is now in the editing stage with the release date to be confirmed. When it is released it is going to cause a real stir as it will be  the first of it’s kind.  Watch this space and be sure to check back to see it’s progress!

Using the 6K RED Epic Dragon in Palau

Filming Manta aggregations in the north of Palau for a cinematic documentary with the RED Dragon. (image: Pete Zuccarini)

We went up north to film the Manta aggregation that occurs at this time of year. I’ve been using a RED Epic Dragon with the Arri 8mm prime lens on front for the widest, closest images possible and we were not disappointed. The footage is for a cinematic documentary on Palau probably for release in the next year.

Sailfin Snapper spawning aggregations

It’s the time of year again to be diving Peleliu. Both the Sailfin Snapper (Symphorichthys spilurus) and Red Snapper (Lutjanus bohar) are starting to aggregate along the east reefs of Yellow Wall and Peleliu Express to the corner.

For those intrepid divers, early morning dives just before the full moon will find them spawning in their thousands. Also making an appearance are the predators such as Bull Sharks and Oceanic Black Tips.

Check out the edited short film from this year:

Watch this space for updates as we return to document this impressive natural event.
