2018 Palau Show Reel released

Film Palau

The Republic of Palau continues to provide great opportunities for Media Production. As we start 2018, I would like to share with you some of the highlights from the past year and our hopes for the future.

New media techniques and projects in Palau

Over the last 12 months we have continued to diversify our filming techniques. Aerial filming with Drones and Aircraft mounted action cams have provided great footage for our clients.

Exciting 6K B-roll from Time-lapse techniques has also added to production value.

We have embraced 360 VR media and continue to develop this new and exciting form of media. Mosaic panoramas provide a new and artistic form for social media in addition to producing very high resolution images for printing.

Underwater filming in Palau is still incredible. New behaviors and environments were documented in greater detail this past year. Our cameras can output 4K Raw footage, meaning the very best colors are available.

Wildlife and conservation topics are still very close to our hearts. A large project on migratory shorebirds was completed in the Autumn. This milestone project raised local awareness for the need to protect certain coastal environments in Palau.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support into 2018.

Together we can make Lightning Strike Productions grow further and provide more innovative and educational media for Palau and Micronesia.

Here’s to a productive and imaginative 2018!

Palau Stock Footage and High Speed Internet!

Stock footage from Palau

Stock Footage is often vital for a production to stay within budget and after 10 years of diving and filming in Palau we have accumulated a huge library of HD and UHD stock footage for just that purpose.

Previously in Palau, uploading at 3kb/s was about all we could hope for on a wobbly internet and this made sending any large files almost impossible. Palau now enjoys high speed internet from an undersea fibre optic cable and with this we have been uploading stock footage to our agents with unprecedented speed.

Resident on location media production in Palau, Stock Footage and photography.

Are you thinking of filming on location in Palau? In this World of increasing airfares, and increased demand for on location media for environmental subjects, having a reliable and professional camera operator somewhere like Palau certainly makes sense.

Palau Stock Footage library

When we catalog media for reference here at Lightning Strikes, it’s often with keywords like: Environment, Sanctuary, UNESCO, illegal fishing, underwater, coral reef, shark, Manta Ray, tourism, indigenous, endemic, aerial, subsistence, coral bleaching, global warming, large school of fish, tuna…..

Underwater icons found on almost every dive in Palau
Location Palau

Palau has a huge variety of healthy and almost pristine ecosystems. Palau provides a huge wealth of opportunities for stories. Visually it’s stunning with it’s tropical islands, rich and diverse coral reefs and plentiful iconic species.

There are numerous conservation stories available.  Marine Protected Areas  in Mangroves and satellite reefs to the National Marine Sanctuary,  the size of Texas.

We have WW2 wrecks and their de-mining and recovery of remains. Extensive underwater caverns and of course the many marine lakes with their millions of Jellyfish.

A huge range of underwater environments……

The other side of the coin is also available. Stories on illegal fishing and the black market trade in protected species. The need to balance tourism and development with conservation. Tuna economics, Climate Change, Ocean acidification, renewable energy, coral bleaching….

There are stories waiting to be told and new technologies waiting to tell them with.

Aerial 360 VR in Palau

As the weather finally cleared it gave me the opportunity to continue with my 360 VR project.

360 VR by Drone

The above image shows both Koror and Nikko Bay in the center with the port of Malakal to the left and lighthouse channel on the right.

46 images stitched together in PTGui to create this equirectangular 360 Panorama.

 Tips for good VR production

-The above image was created by rotating the aircraft . Make sure you overlap the photos enough (by about 30%) for the software to find adequate control points

-Set the camera to manual exposure

-Avoid using a circular polarizer as this changes the exposure in parts of the image depending on the cameras orientation.

The software is both powerful and intuitive.

Aerial Drone Stock Footage

When it comes to Aerial Stock Footage companies that represent me and my work in Palau, I can be very picky about who I send material to. After all, I am sending them my artistic content and there needs to be both a level of trust and commitment to the future representation from them in their site design and business plan.

So it’s not often I can say that I have decided to sign up with a new agency  and have them represent my Stock Content.

The resource for quality Aerial Stock Footage from Palau

Aerial Entertainment Studios though is one and my initial submissions have impressed them enough to add me to their Exclusive team of artists.

My profile page is here:

I’ll be adding to it over time so if you are interested in aerial content check back for new material.

If you want to find other stock footage subjects a bit closer to the ground or even underwater, check out this link for alternative agencies or contact us for the latest.

Alternatively my Youtube channel has new clips uploaded regularly so hit that subscribe button for updates as they happen!

Aerial Stock Footage Palau

Palau Pledge Location Scout

Location scouting for a new project: Over the first two weeks of June I was commissioned to find locations that fit in with a storyboard for a production due to be shot here for the Palau Visitors Authority.

One of the scenes required a locked split shot of corals and an island/beach mid-ground.

I can’t divulge many details about the plot line right now of course only to say that it will be a tourism educational film to be shown on flights into Palau.

Aerial footage over Rock Islands, click on photo for link.

Filming took 6 days with crews from the US and Australia including local entities with a team from Lightning Strike providing Aerial Drone, Underwater and Behind the Scenes filming services.

Location Scout Palau
Part of the remit was “Places children play” and this place was awesome!
Telling the story

Part of the storyboard has an Aerial pov, so I was happy to oblige with a few days of drone flying at some of the most photogenic sites in Palau.

Underwater scene with fish
Due to the high production demands all filming was done in Raw including underwater and the Magic Lantern firmware delivered.

This major production is now in the editing stage with the release date to be confirmed. When it is released it is going to cause a real stir as it will be  the first of it’s kind.  Watch this space and be sure to check back to see it’s progress!

UPDATE!

Now that production is finished and the campaign has been rolled out, check this link to find out more about the Palau Pledge and see the finished film.

Plastic Pollution in Pristine Palau

Reality Check

Even in Palau Plastic Pollution is becoming a serious problem. Whilst filming on location in one of Palau’s most beautiful locations of  Kayangel the other day it was horribly apparent what a enormous issue it is. I put together this short film on what we found there.

We are killing our environment

Human activities are impacting everywhere on the small fragile planet, from the deepest oceans to the upper atmosphere. By far the biggest cause is the sheer number of people. Population control must be tackled immediately if we are to have any hope of bringing other environmental problems to acceptable or sustainable levels.

plastic pollution

Our species consumes so many natural resources and creates so much pollution, it is literally killing it’s own environment. Just like anything that lives beyond it’s environments ability to support it, we will die off as the environment we need to survive fails.

Our oceans are filling with plastic. So many millions of single use bottles. How many can you see in the above image alone?

Watch the film above and listen to the admittedly windy dialog, but the message here is that we should be aiming to cut down on those single use plastic containers. Bottled water or drinks are one of the biggest contributors. Please think about purchasing reusable bottles and taking them with you. If you think that the above photo is just a couple of square meters of one beach the unbelievable scale of this problem might begin to dawn on you. Please make the effort to cut down on your plastic use. This issue is not going away.

A friend of mine recently wrote a blog post on her efforts to cut down on plastic usage, read it here.

New film project started today in Kayangel

Film Palau

There is one place that I would like to film more than anywhere in Palau.

This is the northern reefs and atolls of Kayangel.

And I just got back from filming up there and wanted to share this with you:

Film PalauThis image is created from 7 photographs stitched together and was shot via a drone during our lunch break on the 2nd closest island. Great conditions prevailed after a stormy night but we went up to Kayangel to do some pre-production scouting and subject tests for a new project based on these northern reefs and islands of Palau.

I could not have asked for a better start.

Watch this space to see how this project develops and this initial film from our discoveries there.

If you’d like to find out more about the work being done by the Ebiil Society see this link

Documenting the marine lakes of Palau using a drone

Palau has a huge number of Marine Lakes locked within it’s limestone islands and I’ve wanted to explore them since I’ve been here but they are very hard to get to, usually surrounded by thick jungle growing out of razor sharp rocks.

Because of this few people have managed to explore them so I thought I would use a drone to take a look and see them from a new perspective. Aircraft such as planes and helicopters have of course flown over them but I don’t think anyone has actually descended into one before.

So I used Google Earth to locate a few that were 1 mile or less from a suitable take off point and set to flying over and into them.

Some are impressive like the one in the video above, others no more than a depression with some shallow water in that dries quickly without rain.

What are Marine Lakes?

Marine lakes form in limestone islands  where certain areas of the limestone erode away quicker than their surroundings. This erosion can create a depression or bowl and if that bowl is close enough to the ocean it may fill with sea water percolating through the porous limestone.

What makes Palau’s Marine Lakes special is that sometimes in a few places certain organisms such as Jellyfish have flowed in and remained there.

Some have nothing living in them but maybe frogs, others can have millions of Jellyfish. I’m looking forward to the day I spot one of Palau’s Saltwater Crocodiles……

After months of recon flights over one particular lake, I decided to find a way to film what was inside it. A little local know how told me a route and one day I set off to film there. See this film here for my findings……

The Marine Lake environment is extremely fragile but incredibly interesting. For further reading consider this article.

5 Big uses for drones in Palau

Why Fly a Drone in Palau?

Drones or UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) are one of the biggest growth industries of the early 21st Century. Their rise has been stratospheric. Development of flight, navigation, imaging, and automation systems mean that manufacturers are bringing out new models that take huge leaps forward in development every 6 months.

I started flying drones about two years ago with a 450 class model and was commissioned almost immediately for work. Since then I’ve upgraded to an Inspire 1 for it’s longer flight times, image quality and stability in wind. My company now provides a range of aerial imaging services and flies almost daily.

The technology is so innovative it has opened up a range of opportunities in Palau:

This aerial shot of a burning illegal fishing boat, is not possible by any other method than by Drone.
